In homage to the Blair Witch Project, this episode of Charmed shows the misadventures of several hikers as they stumble upon the imprisoned Tuatha, a good witch gone bad, who has been banished behind a wall of rock in a cave where she has remained entombed for nearly two centuries. Of course, the bumbling hikers manage to free her and get themselves killed in the process. Their idiots, what do you expect?
What we don't expect is another appearance by Jenny who now is enamored by the presence of a teenage boy named Kyle, the new Chosen One. As the only magical being capable of defeating Tuatha, Kyle unfortunately has all the baggage we would expect from a nerdy teenager: a complete and utter lack of confidence in himself, an awkwardness that rears its ugly head when Jenny surfaces, and the self-absorption that only teenagers can seem to appreciate. Eventually, he accepts his destiny and defeats Tuatha. Along the way, though, we realize that it was a good thing the Charmed Ones didn't come into their powers as teenagers. (Season 7's Cheaper by the Coven takes a peak at just such a prospect.)
In this episode we learn that witches can be disempowered. Unfortunately, the spell requires a human heart. Tuatha, of course, has several at the ready since she gleefully kills each of the mindless hikers who stumble across her path. The How to Disempower a Witch spell will figure prominently in Season 5's A Witch in Time when future Baccara uses it with deadly consequences on Paige, Phoebe and Piper. Unfortunately, the writers will misconstrue the spell and cause Paige to lose her whitelighter powers too, something that the disempower a witch spell should not be able to do. But, this break in continuity will have to wait several seasons. For now, at least, none of the Charmed Ones is a whitelighter/witch. Each is vulnerable to the disempowering spell.
On another note, not only does this episode feature the annoying Jenny, it now introduces us to an even more annoying character: Jack Sheridan. I guess superwoman Prue needs a beau, even if he is a caricature of a mindless surfpunk/business school bozo.
