Before the series was given the okay, a pilot was naturally made. The pilot for Charmed was never aired, but can be viewed on YouTube. Instead of Alyssa Milano as Phoebe Halliwell, we are treated to Lori Rom. T.W. King does not appear as Andy Trudeau. And, the character of Darryl has not yet been developed. Commend on this unaired pilot here.

I have seen the pilot and I thought Lori Rom's performance was a little flat, it may have been that Alyssa's performance is so energetic that she makes other actors look flat but I don't think so. I don't think Lori Rom could identify with the part.
I thought the original Andy was much better looking than T W King although he too lacked something in the acting department.
As the story was exactly the same as the first episode of Charmed I have to say it worked well apart from some iffy acting.

My thoughts?
1) Lori Rom was too tall. Nor did she possess the youthful exuberance that Alyssa brought to the part. Her gaunt face contrasted negatively with Alyssa's full, cherubic features (in Season 1).
2) Boy, it's a good thing they re-designed the set for the Halliwell manor. It was way too cluttered and unattractive.
3) I prefer the vanquish in this episode to the one that actually aired. (Although the pole in the middle of the attic could mercifully have been done away with.)
4) I do hope the rights get straightened out so that this pilot could be released on its own or as a supplement to DVD Season 8.
5) Dorian's character was sorely needed!

I didn't really notice the difference in the set, I will have to watch it again and get back to you on that.

The most notable is the attic. There is a pillar in the middle of the scene.

I've seen this episode, and like you guys, Alyssa IS Phoebe. Lori was lacking and I'm glad Alyssa was handed over the part. As for Andy, I think Ted is a much better Andy than the original one. Darryl, yes, he was a much needed characters. Manor wise, I don't remember the difference, likewise with the vanquish. I'd have to rewatch it to tell.

I have heard (read more likely) that the manor in the unaired pilot was the actual house in Echo Park. Clearly, it was a more cluttered home. This would seem to make sense as it saved a lot of money in terms of set building.
As for the vanquish, there is a snake like projection which encircles the sisters and tries to penetrate the power of three spell to no avail. Visually, this vanquish was more stunning.
