Nigel is making plans, plans to wipe out several covens of witches in Season 6's Witchstock. Nigel is able to freeze an entire room full of good witches and one evil witch (Robyn). How is he able to do this?
One way of answering this question is to simply reject outright the episode in which Nigel's freeze occurs. Put another way, Witchstock is such a weird episode and has so many elements that seem to be nonsensical that no one I know wants to consider this episode as carrying any weight on any matter. The fact that "good" witches could be frozen - by a warlock, no less - may violate canon, i.e., what was established earlier, or it may just be a result of writer amnesia. Consider all of the "mistakes" in Witchstock: Jack Halliwell was supposed to be the grandfather of the girls (Pardon My Past); can anyone seriously accept Grams as a youngish hippie?; etc. Just avoid this episode!
From a different perspective, suppose Nigel actually can "freeze" an entire room full of good witches. How does he accomplish this?
Suppose Nigel did not freeze the witches, but merely opened a portal as the TRIAD apparently do when communicating with Christy in Season 8, then we don't have a problem with good witches freezing. We do have another, more hierarchial problem, though.
Generally speaking, warlocks are considered to be lower level occupants in the demonic hierarchy. If, indeed, the TRIAD had this ability to open a portal from another universe or dimension, then how is it that a warlock can access this power, too? Now, it may be that Nigel was a special warlock, akin to Baccara who, as we know, became a very, very powerful warlock in A Witch in Time. Maybe Nigel, although he began demonic life as a warlock, had accumulated enough powers to gain access to TRIAD like powers. Or, maybe he was an agent of the TRIAD, charged with taking out several covens of witches. So now, to everybody's ecstasy (or XTC, if you prefer), the TRIAD were making plans for Nigel!@!
