Though we do not learn of the Source by name until the latter half of Season 2 (Give Me a Sign), we come to understand that the Source has been behind most of the attacks on the Charmed Ones since Season 1. Indeed, Rex and Hannah were the first to go after the Charmed Ones on behalf of some unknown entity. Others later followed suit.
Ironically, the Source believes that nascent Charmed Ones can be eliminated by using warlocks (Rex and Hannah). Shouldn't he have used upper level demons right away? It's not as if the Charmed Ones had not been prophesied as a looming threat (to the demonic Underworld) or as an incredible force for good. Let's write it off to demonic hubris. The Source then and the Source till his demise always underestimates the Charmed Ones and is always the victim of his own hubris. Let's explore then this fantastic story arc, one that essentially covers four seasons.

Well I think one important fact about the Source is that he wasn't really the actual source of all evil in the sense of that is where the evil comes from. He was a powerful demon who had risen to the top of the demonic pecking order who happened to call himself the Source of All Evil.
I think the illusion that he was an equivalent of the devil is what has led to so much disappointment surrounding his demise. He wasn't all knowing. He wasn't some ultimate bad guy. He was just the most powerful single demon at the time.

Well, the illusion was a double-edged blade. An athame that was anathema to the show. To posit the existence of a source of all evil is to raise expectations that all evil could be traced back to this entity. Call it the devil, if you will, or the Source of all evil. The suggestion is the same. The irony is that if you keep referring to the Source eventually you have to reveal who it is. Once revealed, perhaps it is only a short step to having the ultimate battle between the source and the Charmed Ones. Once that battle occurs and an outcome has been achieved, how does one maintain interest in the show? Not easily, I imagine. Charmed tried to preserve the source by having his essence takeover a popular character: Cole. That worked for a while. Still, considering the demons who came and went in Seasons 5 and 6, this fan really missed the Source. He was fun (demonically, of course). Zankou was an able replacement. The re-appearance of the Source in Season 8's Desperate Housewitches was a sad reminder of how much he was missed and a sad commentary on how foolish they were in killing off the character!

How very true. If he was going to be a source of evil then he should have been unvanquishable in the same way that it was impossible to permanetly vanquish Barbas. Surely evil and bad deeds is just as immortal as fear.
Its also worth noting that Good and Evil were supposed to be to relativily equal sides- hence the eternal battle. So why does Evil have a "Source" in one being but Good doesn't? At least not the Charmed Ones ever came into contact with, There are references to beings above the Elders but we never see them.

If I ever get to comment on the premise of Charmed, namely, that there arise three powerful witches, the most powerful witches of all time, who do what exactly? Are they needed to preserve the balance of power between good and evil? Are they there to tip the scales in favor of good? Are they prophesied simply because the Charmed Ones have already been participants in the birth of Melinda Warren and Melinda simply recorded what she had been told by her mother?
