Leo, how could you? Leo, die? No way was Piper ever going to allow this to happen. After all she had been through with Leo, she was not about to lose Leo on a whim. And why, why would he have to die?
This episode is probably one of the finest episodes of Season 8. It also provided Brian Krause with an opportunity to play several different roles besides the now human Leo Wyatt, househusband to a charmed Piper. Leo is a pizza delivery man. He is a taxi driver. He even appears as Henry, the most recent flame of Paige. Indeed, Leo is everywhere in the City as a spell cast by Piper to fool the Angel of Death works all too well. But, not well enough, as the Angel of Death eventually figures out who the real Leo is.
Leo is severely injured in a car accident when the driver of a truck slams into the side of a taxi cab where Leo is sitting and awaiting a glimpse of Wyatt leaving school. While Leo hovers between life and death, Piper and Paige are determined to ferret out the why. Paige assumes it's demonic in nature and tries her best to coerce a confession out of the truck driver. Meanwhile, Piper learns from the Angel of Death that Leo's death is part of a grander scheme. Although he himself does not know the why, only the when, he does point Piper in the direction of those who might know.
Piper immediately turns to those who might know why Leo has to die according to the grand design. She summons an Elder and an Avatar to explain. Neither of them can provide a sufficient explanation and claim that neither has the power to undo what destiny has decided. Summoning her sisters, Piper enlists their support in conjuring an Angel of Destiny via the Power of Three for an explanation.
The Angel of Destiny cannot reveal the why of Leo's impending demise, but does suggest that it is necessary if the Charmed Ones are to survive the forthcoming battle, one they may not survive themselves. Piper is livid at this response and clearly cannot understand why Leo must die for the Charmed Ones to prepare for an ultimate battle.
Phoebe, on the other hand, suggests a compromise, one that might save Leo and allow fate to proceed unimpeded. Phoebe and Billie have witnessed the power of a demon to freeze beings for eternity. Phoebe wonders whether it would be possible to freeze Leo pending the resolution of the ultimate battle. The Angel of Destiny agrees and announces that if the sisters are successful, Leo will be returned healed of his wounds. If the sisters do not survive, then Leo will die as planned since his continued existence would satisfy no one (except, of course, Wyatt and Chris).
