An athame is a double-edged dagger that is used to direct energy. To the extent that Inspector Trudeau indicated as much to Inspector Morris in Something Wicca This Way Comes, we newbies - new to Wicca, that is - learn something. But, when the athame in question is used to kill the good witch of a triquetra coven in this self-same episode, we are being misled. An athame is never used to cut, dice, slice or prepare any of the herbs used in Wiccan potions, let alone "stab" a witch in order to obtain her powers. Misdirecting energy might be what we are being exposed to here.
When Cole wields an athame as he prepares to kill Phoebe, we are once again exposed to misdirection. Later, when Cole's athame is "unearthed" in Black as Cole as the murder weapon of a male witch, it is apparent that Charmed considers an athame not as an implement to direct energy, but a weapon of choice employed by demons and warlocks alike.
