Leo is haunted by his past, as two friends who served in the same outfit as Leo did on the island of Guadalcanal seek their revenge on the whitelighter Leo. Piper, on the other hand, wishes to be accompanied by Leo to a reunion of Guadalcanal veterans. Both promise to cause Leo much consternation in an episode where we finally get some needed backstory on Leo.

There is much to dislike about this episode. Though Saving Private Leo ends in a gush of emotion as Leo finally realizes how much his sacrifice helped his fellow soldiers and made possible their offspring, the idea that Nathan could harbor such a hatred of Leo and acquire a seemingly endless knowledge of whitelighters, yet not know that Leo had become a whitelighter stretches belief almost beyond recognition.
Somehow we are supposed to believe that Nathan has acquired the ability to corporealize as a ghost by focusing his hatred. Instantly, he "teaches" this skill to his brother who just seconds before was utterly mystified. Oh, if only it were that easy!
Moving beyond obvious problems with the episode - and ignoring issues about the timeline of Leo's death, the invasion of Guadalcanal and the intensity of violence that resulted in his death - we are struck by Leo's ability to self-heal after a knife flung by Nathan breaches his chest. We are also struck by Leo's inability to orb from the clutches of Nathan in order to saving his dying charge. Finally, we are dumbstruck by the rapidity with which Leo's charge ascends to heaven, while a dying Piper hangs around long enough for her to incant the spell that vanquishes Nathan and brother.
Still, it's nice to have some backstory on Leo, even if the circumstances are stretched too much.

Still, it's nice to have some backstory on Leo, even if the circumstances are stretched too much. I would have preferred if they'd invited Audrey Wasilewski back as Natalie for this episode (in addition to or instead of Rick and Nathan). It would've been fantastic have her in the flashbacks, especially since she and Leo have a canon history of working together during WWII, which was why they were so close as whitelighters.
