Familiarity breeds contempt as a witch's familiar turns against the witch in order to become a warlock. To achieve immortality, the familiar must shed all of its previous lives. Nine to be exact, since this cat is no Kit! Prue, Piper and Phoebe each vanquish a foul smelling, halitosis exuding, shabbily attired warlock until they compare notes. After a seance that brings the Charmed Ones into contact with the recently deceased witch, the Charmed Ones try to avoid further vanquishes of the warlock. Live is not always that simple, as even purely defensive moves lead to yet another vanquish in the kitchen at the hands of Phoebe. The Charmed Ones even try to avoid provocation, but are thwarted in this attempt too as the wily warlock slays an innocent whilst the Charmed Ones are "on strike". The one-sided cease-fire is over, but the problem remains. At last, the Charmed Ones resolve to make the warlock feels all of the pain that each vanquish should have entailed. The warlock is vanquished for good, and the world can celebrate one less demon wannabe.
As charming as the main story line is, the real story behind this episode is the back story provided in Pre Witched. As the title indicates, we are going to learn about the sisters before they became witches. We are going to discover some of the underlying problems that caused the sisters to split up at the time of Grams' death. Prue was engaged to Roger. But, Roger had suggested that Phoebe perhaps was jealous and was trying to steal yet another boyfriend. Piper was working in a bank branch in order to provide Grams' with the health coverage necessary for her ailing heart. Phoebe has been arrested for shoplifting, a point that gives further incentive for Prue to needle Phoebe. In short, we are shown three sisters who shared more dischord than harmony.
Burdened as she is with the knowledge that her three granddaughters are destined to be the Charmed Ones, Grams tries to maintain harmony. Even her best efforts are frustrated as the quarreling sisters placed their individual needs above the desires of a frail old woman. Grams can barely manage to get the three sisters in the frame for the final picture that she shall take. What she captures are three sisters, each going in their own direction. Not until the events that unfold when Phoebe returns from New York will the image captured in this photo be altered to reflect the new found power of three.
In her despair as to ever succeeding in keeping the sisters together, Grams concocts a potion that would forever strip the sisters of the aura needed to accept their powers once unbound. Grams pleads with Patty that such must be done, as Grams cannot ever see the sisters becoming the Power of Three. Patty begs patience and convinces a still reluctant Grams to withhold use of the power preventing potion. Only her fall from the attic foyer down the stairs, an accident that led to Grams' death, gainsays Grams' preventative measure.
Upon Grams' death, Prue intends to follow through with her marriage to Roger and the move out of the manor. Phoebe, meanwhile, announces her intention to leave San Francisco for New York. Piper tries in vain to hold the family together, but is caught in the middle.
