I was struck when reading Deborah Harkness's new and fascinating book, A Discovery of Witches, by a description of daemon that goes beyond the cardboard caricature in Charmed. According to the main character in Ms. Harkness's book, Dr. Diane Bishop, a powerful witch in self-denial, "daemons are a criminal underclass. Their superabundance of cleverness and creativitiy led them to lie, steal, cheat and even kill, because they felt they could get away with it". From this vantage point, it is hard to imagine daemons organized hierarchically as we do in Charmed, especially when the Source is around. It IS easy to imagine Drake as a daemon though. He is highly creative, a genius in many respects. We are presented with a sort of Renaissance daemon who has managed to channel his energies to avoid the negative side of his "gifts". Drake assiduously denies the vices which he knows he is all to capable of in order to pursue his creative bent. As such, Drake emerges as the one true daemon in Charmed.
