Post by WELCOME THREAD on Aug 5, 2006 17:31:31 GMT -5
I'd like to welcome all of you to my new proboard. The title, Charmedverse, should give a hint about the site's purpose. As a fan of CHARMED, I would like view it as a world that can be added to, interpreted, and discussed in all of its aspects. This is not a site for news. There are plenty of other sites for that information. This is a place to discuss, debate and contribute. I hope you will find it both interesting and fascinating. And, since I know nothing about banners, pictures, etc., it's a place where you can help make it a special.
Please introduce yourself in this thread. Once again, thank you for taking the time to check out this new site. Tabla rasa means we are free to construct it as we wish!

Since I have now created a new thread to place introductions, please introduce yourself in that thread. As for this welcome message, let me continue by stating that for the moment Charmed is a more or less fixed entity. The 178 episodes, plus the unaired pilot, are all that we have in terms of the visual Charmed. The pulp fictions, currently arriving one every two months, add to Charmedverse by introducing us to new demons and new plots involving the sisters. Seldom, though, do these novels add to the underlying mythology that is Charmed.
The intention of Charmedverse is to take this mythology and explore its meaning. Under the pressure to produce a weekly TV drama on time and under the constraints of an ever changing budget (from season to season), decisions were made by the writers, the story editors and the executive producers with respect to this mythology. To maintain or enhance ratings, characters were added or deleted, certain elements were introduced (Magic School, for instance) and others abandoned (Paige's temp jobs). Whatever the causes of the twists and turns in Charmedverse, the eight-year run has left us with a body of work that needs to be interpreted free of the pressures of putting an episode on air. The interpretation may disagree with decisions that were made, or it may take an idea to places undeveloped by the writers and producers.
Blaming the writers or the producers is not what this is all about. Writers and producers are human too. They make mistakes and don't always foresee the consequences of this dramatic invention or that. Given time and the ability to re-write ad nauseum, many of these "errors" surely would have been corrected. That's what authors and editors do, though even they do not have the luxury of unlimited time. Flaubert may have spent years finding "le mot juste" (the perfect word), but the reality of publishing is less understanding. Sometimes the right word, phrase or idea cannot be found in time, despite an author's best intentions.
Charmedverse is about interpretation and extension. Let's consider what we have. If we have to discard or downplay an idea or invention in order to make sense of the greater whole, then we do so, albeit with trepidation. Ultimately, our goal is to extend Charmedverse to imagine, if you will a series that had continued into a Season 9 and beyond. Perhaps, if we are luckly, we might find that our ideas intersect with those of the creators who may one day be called upon to make a Charmed movie or a spin-off series. Both options appeal to us, but in their absence we have Charmedverse. Welcome aboard!

While the board looks nice, I do have to say that Blue forum text on a Black background that highlights as Blue.... Not really the best default combination of colors as it's killing my eyes trying to read what anything is (Speaking of eye strain why on earth did Proboards see fit to make their security check letters so faint and messed up looking that I had to guess 3 times before I got lucky with ones I could read...) Could have sworn I registered before? Did you reset the database anytime in the past few months or am I just getting somewhat senile and I used a different password than I usually do? ah well...Hi!

Point taken on the highlight colour, I have toned it down.

A restatement and extension of the Charmedverse mission statement appeared in the Charmed Cafe after a long discourse on Paige's powers. Here is the complete text: Let me add a parenthetical, yet extremely important point in which the whole dicussion of Paige's powers, etc. is embedded. Charmed, the TV series, is finished. What we have before us are 178 episodes that attempted to present a body of work that depicted a highly dysfunctional, but loving family of supernatural beings who by and large risk their lives and those of their loved ones to save Innocents. Under the pressure of producing a weekly TV serial in a limited timeframe and under the constraints of a budget that may have allowed more or less to be possible, Charmed produced 178 episodes. Many, many writers and story editors were involved. Never was any one person charged with vetting new episodes against the history laid down in previous episodes, although perhaps Brad Kern implicitly tried to fulfill this role. No person wearing different hats could possibly master all the minutiae of Charmed and analyse how the various strands held together. That would have been a task for a person specifically charged with doing so. Since Charmed is over. No such person will ever be officially hired to take on that daunting role. True, offical compendia may come forth to help clarify some points, as the authors chosen for such clarifying tasks endeavor to do. They don't always get it right, however, as many of comments in the past and in the future will show. Yet, for many of us, there is a burning desire to make sense of it all. We seek to impose order amid the chaos of 178 episodes. We understand that concepts and characters tried in earlier seasons may have been altered or even abandoned in later episodes. We understand further that later concepts, perhaps introduced to win new fans to Charmed, may have conflicted in significant ways with previous iterations of the show. We try our best to make sense of all of this and recognize the limitations. Sometimes there's not enough in the series to arrive at a definitive answer. Sometimes resolutions to stories rely too heavily on drama and abandon logic - both internal and external to the show - completely. Still, we try our best. It is only through passionate discourse and the willingness to read, ponder, respond, analyze, reflect upon further and perhaps alter initial assessments that we, as a community, can construct a Charmed universe that more or less makes sense. Thus, perhaps it is understandable why I vehemently reject attempts by those who would depict broadcast Charmed as the sine qua non. It is not and can never be CANON. It needs to be dissected, deconstructed, critically challenged, deeply appreciated, and ultimately reconstructed with the deep love and affection that the many writers, producers, and executive producers put into its creation. This certainly is the mission statement of my own forum - charmedverse.proboards74.com - but it also, I fervently believe and hope, reflects the desires of the many participants in the Charmed Cafe. So, let the fires of discourse and debate continually be stoked and renewed. I would also hope that if there comes a day when a Charmed Sons spin-off succeeds in getting broadcast and supported that maybe the powers that be will take time to consider what serious fans of the whole enterprise think. Maybe that's arrogrant on our part. It probably is. But, it is does out of love and the desire to see a new version of Charmed or some derivative succeed and be even better than its predecessor.
