Piper and Leo have disappeared into the heavens. Prue and Phoebe meanwhile are enjoying a brief respite from demonic attacks, even though they now know that the TRIAD are responsible for the majority of them. The sisters, though, are having trouble running the club and keeping the household bills paid.
In the meantime, Darryl is on the trail of a vicious killer who attacks his victims and carves a triangular rune onto their foreheads. Of course, it's demonic. Darryl already has Prue working on it. The Guardians are upper level demons who practice such ritualistic killings.
Late one night, Prue and Phoebe take a call from Darryl who is hot on the trail of Emilio, the msot likely suspect. Calling the sisters from a local hotspot, Darryl ignores Prue's advice to stay back. Following the suspect into an alley behind the club, Darryl loses track of Emilio and is jumped from behind. His own death is averted when a passerby stumbles onto the scene and becomes the next victim. Prue and Phoebe arrive to prevent Emilio from killing Darryl as well.
Prue succeeds in vanquishing the Guardian possessing Emilion by whisking a metal rod through the Guardian's own rune. Of course, had Prue read the Book of Shadows entry in its entirety she would have known to aim for the rune all along. Improvisation, though, came quickly and success was achieved.
Afterwards, as the crime scene investigators and medical staff descend upon the scene, Prue and Phoebe face a vexing dilemma. Do they risk expose and tell the truth and risk, of course, getting laughed out loud when they blame the attack on demons. Even the little bit of information they can reveal is problematic. The athame that Emilio used for the carving disappeared when the Guardian was vanquished. The sisters agree that mum's the word, that is until Cole Turner, assistant District Attorney shows up. Phoebe is smitten instantly and volunteers to assist in the prosecution.
Cole's court case does not get very far since the murder weapon is missing. The public defender challenges the eyewitness testimony of Prue and Phoebe since technically they did not witness the murder of the passerby and cannot reveal the demonic nature of the attack. Besides, the courtroom of Judge Free Willie is notorious. Many criminal defendants get off scot free. As will be revealed later, this has less to do with leniency or poor prosecution cases. Rather, the judge is an upper level demon who dispatches the Guardians to collect souls.
When Piper finally returns, she gets back into the action by assisting Prue and Phoebe after the ada Cole Turner himself is attacked by Emilio. Phoebe's premonition of this event and the sisters' timely rescue mission avert any mayhem, but once again Prue and Phoebe find themselves in court as witnesses to the attack on Cole by Emilio. This time, though, Piper will freeze all of the innocents so that the sisters can disentangle the demonic roots. Much to their surprise, the entire courtroom: public defender, bailiff, court recorder, etc. are all possessed by demons. The judge of course is an upper level demon. The battle begins as the Charmed Ones take on each of these demons.
Unbeknownst to the Charmed Ones, however, Cole Turner does not freeze either. He feigns a freeze, but we learn that he is a demon when he vamquishes the judge for interfering in his plan. What that plan exactly is we do not know. But we suspect that it will involve the Charmed Ones.
In sum, in this very good episode the following occurs. Cole debuts, Leo proposes, Piper rejects the proposal initially, Phoebe goes blond and Prue stays Prue.
