Presumably this pulp fiction is a very early version of the Charmed Ones. Leo is not present and Cole is nowhere to be seen, despite the fact that Phoebe is back at college attending classes. This novel features the Charmed Ones as naive witches, witches who aren't totally aware of the threats that await. This is espcially true for Prue and Piper who manage to fall for the same warlock, a warlock who has given each a magical mickey. The potion has its intended effect as Prue and Piper spend most of this novel sabotaging each other in order to win the attention of Dylan Thomas, rock singer, guitarist and leader of the band, Dylan Thomas and the Good Nights. Did I mention he was a warlock, too?
Unfortunately, there are no consequences for the Charmed Ones, except for wounded pride, a nasty review from a newspaper nightlife critic, a rather large dry cleaning bill for both Prue and Piper. Unfortunately, Power Outage had not made its way into Charmed lore. So, each of these spiteful actions do not weaken the power of three, although they do distract Piper and Prue from helping Phoebe who is attempting to solve the 1958 Halloween Murders at Taylor Hall, a former social spot on the campus of the college Phoebe is attending. Phoebe has chosen to investigate the murders to receive extra credit in her class.
The two story arcs are loosely threaded together. Very loosely, I should say, since at times the reader gets so lost in the disappointingwarlock story that he or she forgets about Phoebe. The denouement does manage to tie the two strands tightly together so that at least the reader can feel satisfied that the two plots have been resolved and that it wasn't a complete waste of time reading about two witches fighting over a warlock. Where was Leo when we needed him?
Again, the author misconstrues Piper's power. As in the early episodes, her power was incorrectly stated as being the ability to time freeze. She can't, but the author adopts the error. Of course, since there is no need to freeze time, the mistake is of no consequence. Piper does use her ability to decelerate motion in order to figure out the warlock's ruse and to escape his clutches. There is no need o freeze time. As for Prue, she later uses her power to whisk him away after Dylan blinks from one location to another. Of course, she wouldn't have been in this situation had she heeded the wizened Piper's advice to avoid Dylan, the witches worst warlock!
