Frankly, the episode was a bit of a mess. There were some moments that were cute and reminiscent of the real Charmed. The bit character Lucy, the head of Kappa Tau Kappa, the sorority that Maggie (the Phoebe analog) is rushing, is delightful. She would have been wonderful as a demonic character in the real Charmed. On the other hand, I did not care for the cis-male reference to Harry, the Charmed Ones' whitelighter, the head of the Women's Studies Department at Hilltowne University. Cis-male, really? Identity politics is so boring, divisive and irrelevant. Yet, here we have it in Charmed the Re-Boot, promoted as a feminist update to Charmed. Okay, the comment was uttered by an openly lesbian character and the negative connotation invoked by use of the word is superficially appropriate given that Mel resents Professor Harry Greenwood as the new head of the Women's Studies Department who replaced her murdered Mom. But really? Are viewers supposed to google cis male or cis gender to understand what that means? For those in the dark, all the prefix cis means is that someone who identifies as a male was actually born a male.
On the other hand, let's give a shout out to making sexual assault a thematic background to this version of Charmed. We have a demon who has been accused of sexual assault. His victim lies in a coma unable to testify against him. Professor Thaine, the human avatar of the demon Taydeus, is re-instated because of a lack of evidence to affirm the accusation. Well, he does get vanquished in the end!
The cheap dig at the current president - Donald Drumpf - is exactly that: cheap! As much as I despise His Idiocy, he is not the harbinger of an apocalypse. Yet, here it is in the pilot to justify the appearance of the Charmed Ones, as their task will be to avert pending disaster by fighting the Source of All Evil. Goodness me, how will this play out if this new series should be a success and go into syndication. Will future viewers wonder if President Kamala Harris is the harbinger of a coming apocalpyse?
So what are we now to call the new house? Vera Villa, as all three witches have given names beginning with M and surnames beginning with V (Vera and Vaughn)?
